Gun-Wielding Justin Bieber's Magenta Money Pants
Sep 2nd 2012, 01:35

First it's driving troubles, now it's a photo scandal - as Justin Bieber is feeling the heat thanks to a recently released controversial personal pic.

The 18-year-old Canadian sensation has drawn ire after a snap of himself and his famous girlfriend, Selena Gomez, was posted online this past Thursday showing the couple posing with the "Wizards of Waverly Place" actress' dad on the set of her new film, "While I'm Dead... Feed the Dog." Problem is, "role model" Justin just so happened to be holding a gun pointed at his potential father-in-law's belly.

While the gat-wielding moment was clearly all in jest, Bieber still has faced a barrage of angry comments, with one gossip writer opining, "Justin, whether you like it or not, you're a role model. And millions of fans, 27 million on Twitter, are following your every move. You have power in this industry, and holding a gun in jest is just plain foolish."

Even Justin's fellow Canadians have spoken out, with the Globe and Mail writing, "Guns are on everyone's mind as a serious crisis in Canada and the United States. Everyone, that is, except maybe Justin Bieber."

Despite being under fire from the public, the Biebs looked cheerful on Saturday (September 1) as he left a Los Angeles recording studio following a music making session.

The "Never Say Never" star was curiously clad in magenta sweatpants with cash printed on the zipper pockets as he kindly made time for his fans before continuing about with his Labor Day weekend doings..

LONDON -- Usher's had a turbulent few months, but now he's back where he belongs – on stage.

On Saturday, the R&B singer kicks off the iTunes Festival in London, a month's worth of free shows at the Roundhouse.

Over the summer, Usher coped with the death of his stepson and a custody battle over his two sons, which he won.

He took time out to deal with these challenges, all while his fans were desperate for him to perform again.

Usher jokes: "Man, it's like `shut up and entertain, we don't care about your personal stuff.'"

He adds, however, that his fans gave him support on Twitter during the tough times, proving their loyalty.

The iTunes 2012 Festival line-up also includes One Direction, Lana Del Rey, Muse and Alicia Keys.

Is 'Argo' A Front-Runner For Oscar?
Sep 1st 2012, 15:11

The idea that Ben Affleck's "Argo" could be one of the biggest Oscar contenders of the year should come as little surprise -- and not just because of that gangbusters trailer or Affleck's growing pedigree as a director. Just look at how Warner Bros. handled the release of the thriller, a true story about how the CIA smuggled six Americans out of Iran under the cover of a Hollywood film production during the hostage crisis.

First, the studio moved "Argo" from its Sept. 14 release date to the more awards-friendly Oct. 12 calendar slot. Then, Warner Bros. moved its two other potential Oscar-contending dramas, "Gangster Squad" and "The Great Gatsby," into next year. Both shifts were done because of extenuating circumstances -- reshoots stemming from the Aurora murders for "Gangster Squad"; additional effects work and soundtrack production for "The Great Gatsby" -- but if Warner Bros. wasn't so high on "Argo," would either have happened so easily?

At this point, it's academic: "Argo" premiered at the prestigious Telluride Film Festival on Friday, and the reviews were rapturous.

"'Argo' is a crackerjack political thriller told with intelligence, great period detail and a surprising amount of nutty humor for a serious look at the Iran hostage crisis of 1979-81," wrote Todd McCarthy on THR.com. "From all points of view, this is one the major releases of the fall season."

His colleague, Oscar expert Scott Feinberg echoed that sentiment.

"[T]he audience gave a rousing ovation to the movie, which appears to me to be a very solid contender to score a best picture Oscar nomination," he wrote.

Rodrigo Perez, writing for the Indiewire blog The Playlist, compared Affleck's work on "Argo" to famed directors Alan J. Pakula and Sydney Pollack, and noted that the sprawling cast is one of the film's big strengths.

'"Argo' practically bursts at the seams, but each great character actor has their place, serving a complex and ambitious narrative that expertly juggles political intrigue, tense emotional stakes and Hollywood glitter, resulting in an absorbing and engrossing picture."

Affleck stars in the film, alongside Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Chris Messina, Scoot McNairy, Kyle Chandler, Rory Cochrane, Tate Donovan and Richard Kind among others.

For more thoughts on the film, check out the slideshow of reactions below. "Argo" screens at the Toronto Film Festival next week; it hits theaters on Oct. 12.

British Entertainer Max Bygraves Dies At 89
Sep 1st 2012, 14:32

LONDON -- British entertainer Max Bygraves, a veteran singer and comedian known for his old-fashioned charm, has died, his agent confirmed Saturday. He was 89.

Agent Johnny Mans said Bygraves, who had suffered from Alzheimer's disease, died in his sleep Friday at his daughter's home in Hope Island, Queensland, Australia.

Bygraves won fame in Britain's music halls and theaters after World War II, becoming one of the country's best known variety performers and releasing dozens of popular records.

Famed for his catchphrase "I wanna tell you a story," Bygraves become a staple performer on radio through the 1950s, and later appeared frequently on British television shows and in a small number of films.

"We have lost one of the best entertainers that Britain has ever produced," Mans said. "His death is a great loss to the entertainment profession and a great loss to all of his friends in the industry."

Born to an east London dockworker, Bygraves was awarded an OBE – a British honor – in 1982, and performed regularly for the royal family, first in 1950 for King George VI.

"He was one of the all-time greats of British show business," comedian Jimmy Tarbuck told BBC television.

The performer's career spanned six decades, with Bygraves recording an album in 2001 for the Royal British Legion charity. He was best known for the songs "You Need Hands" and the novelty hit "You're a Pink Toothbrush."

Bygraves also won brief acclaim in the United States, where he toured in the 1950s and appeared alongside Judy Garland at New York's Palace Theater.

The entertainer emigrated from Britain to Australia in 2005.

While most of the known universe seems to agree that Clint Eastwood's RNC speech was, at best, way off-message and, at worst, embarrassing for everyone involved, Bill Maher took a moment on Friday's "Real Time" to defend the veteran actor and director.

After all, Maher is a comedian so he knows what it's like to bomb in front of an audience. From where he was sitting, Eastwood did anything but bomb.

What Did Tom Cruise Think Of 'The Master'?
Sep 1st 2012, 16:06

VENICE, Italy — Director Paul Thomas Anderson acknowledges that Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard was the inspiration for the title character in `'The Master," but says the focus of the film is the relationship between a charismatic spiritual leader and his troubled follower, not the movement itself.

The movie, set in the 1950s, stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a charismatic cult leader who captivates a tortured but sympathetic World War II veteran portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix.

`'The narrative is just driven by these two guys, and their love for each other," Anderson told a news conference on Saturday ahead of the highly anticipated film's world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival.

Anderson sought to quickly dispel any speculation about the film's influence on his friendship with Tom Cruise, who starred in Anderson's 1999 film `'Magnolia" and whose Scientology beliefs are well-documented.

`'We are still friends. I showed him the film, and the rest is between us," Anderson said.

Anderson said the fact that Hoffman's character, Lancaster Dodd, was inspired by Hubbard `'is not an elephant in the room."

`'I really don't know a whole hell of a lot about Scientology, particularly now," he said. `'But I do know a lot about the beginning of the movement and it inspired me to use it as a backdrop for these characters."

Phoenix's character, Freddie Quell, is completely unhinged, unable to keep a job, drinking anything that will give him a buzz, including liquid siphoned from a ship's missile, and displaying a wide range of inappropriate behaviors throughout his journey in Dodd's entourage.

Phoenix, appearing in his first movie in several years, himself displayed some mildly erratic behavior during the news conference, fidgeting, lighting up several cigarettes and leaving the dais to go back stage at one point for two minutes.

Hoffman, Phoenix's costar, on one side and Anderson on the other tried to ignore the antics.

Phoenix responded to just one question, about how he approached the character, appeared impervious to the others, and he drew boos from news photographers when he cut his photo call off after just 14 seconds.

`'I'll just say, I'll say I don't think, maybe Paul gives, or gave me, the impression I had leeway. But I don't think I ever did," Phoenix said. `'I don't know where it comes from and I don't care."

Whether or not the aloof demeanor was sincere or an act was impossible to tell. But Phoenix's appearance in a documentary by his brother-in-law, actor Casey Affleck, premiered in Venice in 2010, about Phoenix's seemingly downward spiral caused many to speculate whether the whole thing was a publicity stunt.

In Phoenix's return to film, the first glimpse of the depth of Quell's troubles comes on R&R in Hawaii in the waning days of the war.

He builds an erotic sand sculpture of a naked woman on a beach crowded with sailors. As they inspect his work, Quell mimics sexual acts with the sand figure that go on for just a few seconds longer than is really funny. That the antics are a cover for a painful loneliness comes through minutes later when he lays down next to a carefully sculpted figure, head nestled near the breasts, offering an unreturned embrace.

After the war, he can't keep a job and kills, or nearly kills, a migrant worker with the poisonous swill he distills. The former sailor seeks drunken refuge on a ship that is carrying Dodd, his family and followers from California to New York via the Panama Canal.

As the two grow closer, Dodd's wife, played by Amy Adams, begins to worry about Quell's true intentions and if his destructive behavior will endanger their movement. But Dodd won't give up his protege.

Hoffman said the two characters are more similar than they appear.

"They're both wild beasts I think ultimately. One of them has just tamed it somehow and he's trying to teach other people how to do that, but ultimately that's where the doubt and the whole reluctant prophet thing comes in," Hoffman said. `'Ultimately he wants to be wild like Freddie is, so there's this real attraction there over that. `'

Hoffman said he can relate to the desire to act without reservation, asking: `'Why can't I just run naked through the streets of Venice?"

`'Why can't I just do that and have it be OK, you know. Is it possible that I could just have sex with everyone I see today?' No, it can't. But I wish that was possible, so I think I'm going to go find my master and he'll teach me how not to do that."

Annual MDA Telethon Goes A New Way
Sep 1st 2012, 15:36

LOS ANGELES -- No tote board. No Jerry Lewis. And not from Las Vegas.

An annual Muscular Dystrophy Association television fundraiser goes a new way Sunday, with a different title and featuring three hours of taped appearances by entertainers including country music star Carrie Underwood, pop singer Gavin DeGraw, alternative pop group OneRepublic, Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am and songstress Carole King.

The renamed "MDA Show of Strength" was pre-produced and taped in Los Angeles, New York and Nashville, Tenn., said association spokeswoman Roxan Olivas in Tucson, Ariz.

It is set to show on various TV and cable channels in 150 markets around the country from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Central and Mountain time and 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time.

There won't be a traditional tote board, and Olivas said some cities will have local hosts. But the overall event will urge national phone, text and online pledges toward funding efforts to find treatments and cures for neuromuscular diseases.

The annual Labor Day weekend telethon ended a 45-year run last year with comedian and longtime host Lewis, who turned 86 in March and lives in Las Vegas.

Lewis was part of a comedy duo with Dean Martin and became a film icon with antics and characters including the "The Nutty Professor."

He went on to become synonymous with the Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon after starting it in 1966 with a marathon 22-hour show at a single TV station in New York.

Lewis was MDA national chairman from the early 1950s to 2011, and is credited with raising more than $1.6 billion over the years. He was nominated in 1977 for a Nobel Peace Prize for his work with the telethon and muscular dystrophy relief.

The event moved to Las Vegas in 1973, and had stints in Los Angeles before moving back to Las Vegas.

Despite Lewis' absence, telethon officials last year reported raising $61.5 million in a six-hour show with several hosts. A silent montage of Lewis film clips was shown, but he didn't take part in person or tape his signature song, "You'll Never Walk Alone."

We've said it before and we'll say it again: Salma Hayek's still got it.

The Latina actress attended the Gucci Award For Women In Cinema at The Venice Film Festival yesterday in a stunning plunging gown, successfully making that case that 45 is the new 25. The floor-length black dress gave a nod to the glamour of old Hollywood while showcasing the mother's voluptuous figure. The whole look was very Jessica Rabbit.

Even though Salma looks pretty perfect these days, she told Glamour about her childhood struggles with acne back in March. And while it's a little hard to picture the bombshell as anything less than flawless (the woman can even wear pajamas in public and look great), it's nice to hear that gorgeous celebrities have their own beauty woes and can come out looking this amazing.

Do you like Salma's risqué evening gown or is it too much cleavage for you? Check out the photo below and tell us what you think.

Nicole Richie's Pre-QVC Labor Day Weekend Departure
Sep 1st 2012, 23:18

Jet-setting beauty Nicole Richie was seen arriving at LAX airport in Los Angeles, CA on Friday afternoon (August 31).

The "Fashion Star" mentor looked chic in a patterned maxi dress, sandals and a fedora as she quickly paced through the terminal to catch the departing flight.

In career news, the 30-year-old recently sat down with ELLE magazine and when asked about the differences between her QVC line and her Macy's Impulse line, she said, "The biggest difference is that the QVC customers are convenience shoppers, and the Macy's customers are department-store shoppers."

Miss Richie added, "When I'm in the creative process, I try to not focus on the differences. You'll see a little bit of Winter Kate and House of Harlow 1960 in both collections. With QVC, I did things like lace-trimmed T-shirts. I went into scarves with QVC, which I haven't done in Winter Kate or my Macy's Impulse line."

Nicole also discussed her inspiration explaining, "It all begins with music for me. I have a pretty eclectic taste in music. I'm a huge fan of the '60s and '70s, I love classic rock, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, and the overall freedom of that time. I also love rap and hip-hop. Specifically for QVC, I would say that it was more '70s focused. I also find inspiration in my everyday environment, books, travel, and great vintage shops and flea markets.

The fashionista's QVC line is set to debut on September 6.

Bonding with her castmates over the Labor Day weekend, Nina Dobrev joined Candice Accola and Kayla Ewell on a Saturday (September 1) trip to the Magic Kingdom park in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

The trio of "Vampire Diaries" darlings romped about the Sunshine State theme park while at one point stopping to pose with a Halloween-dressed Mickey Mouse in front of The Haunted Mansion.

With the Disney adventure coming ahead of the young actresses' hit CW series' fourth season premiere on October 11th, Nina excitedly tweeted her plans to gal pal Emma Watson prior to the Magic Kingdom visit, as she messaged, "@EmWatson cant wait to see you @ TIFF next wknd for the PERKS premiere! In the meantime,Im going to Harry Potter World, ill be thinkin of ya! Laser doesn't work for everyone, and hair plugs eventually fall out. Blurg!"

In the tweet, Dobrev mentions her upcoming movie "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," which is set for a September 20th theatrical release in the States.

The 23-year-old Bulgarian beauty plays a young woman named Candace in the Stephen Chbosky directed romantic drama, recently talking with Ocean Drive magazine about the role, saying, "I think every character I play will always have a piece of me, in some way. Maybe not if I'm in 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' - maybe then, not at all. But there was something about my personality and work ethic that related to Candace."

"She's a perfectionist, a go-getter, an overachiever. I've been able to relate to all those things, but I've never had the chance to play that kind of character before... I really do believe that some people, even the greatest actors, if you're not like the person you're playing in a way, you can't access that role. It has to kind of be in you," Nina added.

She's been a media focal point ever since announcing her plans to divorce ex-husband Tom Cruise, so it comes as little surprise to find Katie Holmes selected for yet another magazine cover gig - this time adorning the October 2012 issue of Vanity Fair.

The 33-year-old actress/designer adorns the front page via a plain profile pose with the report-based feature focusing on Scientology and the history of Cruise's relationships.

Amongst the topics of discussion, former Scientologist Marc Headley told VF special correspondent Maureen Orth that the woman's role is obedience-dependent.

Headley explained, "It's not like you only have to please your husband—you have to toe the line for Scientology."

Marc added that Cruise's famous exes, Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz, both ran "afoul" of the proclaimed religion. "You can't do anything to displease Scientology, because Tom Cruise will freak out," Headley noted.

Also delving into Katie's pre-nuptial agreement with Tom and her dad's concerns over Suri being born into the church, the entire TomKat Scientology story is available from Vanity Fair!

Sep 1st 2012, 20:59

Enjoying an afternoon together, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were spotted heading to a movie in New York City on Saturday (September 1).

Walking the Big Apple streets hand-in-hand, the darling couple looked very happy as the 31-year-old reality star rocked a leather skirt and white top. Before the trip, the brunette beauty tweeted, "Aaliyah hair today."

Earlier in the day, Kim revealed her mood via Twitter and wrote, "Listening to Stevie Wonder! I just called to say I love you! He's the best!"

In related news, Miss Kardashian will be switching networks and appear on a three-episode arc of Lifetime's hit show "Drop Dead Diva."

Although she's taking a break from her reality TV show, Kim recently defended her fame to V Magazine saying, "I think there was a quote where somebody said that reality stars will never get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. So, of course I'm so competitive that I think that it would be a huge achievement and a goal that anyone would want. I would love to break that mold."
